Proper oral hygiene helps to maintain oral health, as well as your overall physical health.
Brushing and flossing are important ways to keep your teeth and gums healthy, but did you know that good oral hygiene habits can also help to protect your overall physical health? Research shows that there is an important connection between oral health and overall health — read on to find out more about the link, and why proper hygiene is key when it comes to your wellness…
What’s the link between oral and overall health?
The mouth is packed with bacteria, and while most of them are harmless, some can lead to disease. Good oral hygiene habits, such as regular brushing and flossing, help to keep harmful bacteria at bay. Without proper oral hygiene, however, harmful bacteria in the mouth can multiply and lead to a range of issues. Some common oral health conditions caused by poor oral hygiene include tooth decay, gum disease and oral infections. Oral bacteria have been linked to certain health conditions, including certain heart diseases, some pregnancy and birth complications, and pneumonia.
Some health conditions can exacerbate oral health issues. Diabetes, for example, reduces the body’s ability to fight off infections, which increases one’s risk of gum disease. Other health conditions that can affect one’s oral health for various reasons include HIV/AIDS, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
What are some good oral hygiene habits?
In order to maintain your oral health and keep your teeth and gums in optimal condition, it is advisable to brush your teeth at least twice a day. Try to brush for at least two minutes each time, and be sure to clean all the surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, and brush gently to prevent damage to the enamel of your teeth.
It is also important that you floss your teeth every day. This helps to remove food particles and debris from areas that cannot be reached with a toothbrush, such as between the teeth and under the gum line. Rinsing with an anti-bacterial mouthwash can also help to remove leftover food particles from the mouth and leave your breath smelling fresh and clean.
Besides sticking to good daily hygiene habits, it’s also a good idea to see your dentist for regular check-ups and cleans. This will help to maintain your oral health, as well as your overall physical health.
How can we help?
At Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry, we help our patients maintain their oral health by providing laser treatments for gingivitis. This helps to destroy toxins and eliminate gum disease before it progresses to a more advanced stage of the disease known as periodontitis.
During the process, the dental plaque is thoroughly cleaned from the root. A dental laser works by eliminating bacteria and destroying their by-products. If you would like to find out more about our biological approach to gingivitis treatment, please have a look here.
