Biocompatible white fillings are safe and blend in with your natural teeth.
Even with good oral hygiene habits, it is possible to experience tooth decay or cavities at some point. Fortunately, these issues can be easily resolved, especially if they are identified at an early stage. Dental fillings are a common treatment for tooth decay and cavities. If your dentist recommends that you have a filling placed, there are a number of materials you can choose from. At Yiannikos Dental, however, we exclusively use a biocompatible material that is healthy and safe. Read on to find out what kinds of materials are used in dental fillings and what the best option for your overall health is…
Can silver fillings be replaced?
In the past, it was common for dentists to place silver amalgam fillings. These fillings are generally quite affordable, but because they are silver in colour, they are easily noticed and can impact the aesthetic of one’s smile. Silver amalgam fillings also contain a certain amount of mercury.
At Yiannikos Dental, we use a technique known as Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) to safely remove amalgam fillings. During the process, a high-volume air filtration system is used in the room, and oxygen is delivered through a nasal cannula to the patient in order to prevent any inhalation of mercury vapour. The amalgam is sectioned into pieces and carefully removed.
Why choose biocompatible fillings?
Biocompatible white fillings have a number of benefits. They blend in seamlessly with the natural teeth, and are made with a safe material that mimics the dentin and enamel layers of the teeth.
At Yiannikos Dental, we offer dental fillings that are made with a material known as Admira Fusion VOCO. This material is free from harmful parabens that contribute to allergies. The material has a ceramic base and is completely biocompatible. These biocompatible fillings are an ideal choice for all patients, but are particularly good for children, pregnant women and individuals who suffer from allergies, autoimmune diseases and neoplastic diseases.
How long do fillings last?
When it comes to biocompatible white fillings, you can expect your restoration to last anywhere between seven and 20 years, depending on your oral hygiene, the position of the filling, and the size of the filling. We encourage our patients to come in for regular dental check-ups so that we can identify any wear and tear before it becomes serious. If your dentist identifies any decay under or near a filling, it may be necessary to have the filling replaced.
In order to increase the longevity of your dental fillings, it is important that you maintain proper oral hygiene such as regular brushing and flossing. Your dietary choices also have a considerable impact on the longevity of your fillings, as well as the overall condition of your teeth. Try and limit your consumption of sugary foods that contribute to the growth of biofilms on your fillings, and avoid foods that are very hard and sticky, such as candy and whole nuts, as these tend to increase the wear and tear on your fillings, as well as the chewing surfaces of your teeth.
